Afghanistan
What should we do? Our C.I.A. trained the original terrorists (what is now the Taliban,) including Osama bin Laden. He was our “freedom fighter.” When he was fighting the resistance, we said that it was wrong for Russia to invade Afghanistan. Now he is our enemy because we have invaded their land.
What do they want? They want to be left alone. They want us, the infidels, to leave their land - and the land of their forefathers, the Middle East. Shouldn’t we?
I’m not defending the Taliban’s treatment of human rights (especially women’s rights.) But if they invaded our land, we would be behind every tree shooting. History shows than an idea can defeat any armament. Could the British defeat the Americans? The Israelis defeat the Palestinians? Will the Shia defeat the Sunnis?
If it wasn’t for oil, would we have troops in the Middle East? If we didn’t have troops in the Middle East, we wouldn’t need troops in Afghanistan. We spend billions on barrels of oil and troops, tanks and carrier groups. Is it worth it? Is it worth the lost lives and suffering on both sides so we can drive S.U.V.s?
When we achieve energy independence, these “hot spots” will fade from our consciousness.
